Downsizing - Not Just for the Retired!

Most people think of the later years of life when you hear "downsizing." Yet you may find yourself downsizing due to starting your own business, which requires more cash flow. Some people are faced with moving to a smaller home because their previous home was damaged by a storm or other tragedy. Whatever the reason, it can be a daunting task. If you take it step by step, the results can put you in a great position to enjoy the next season of your life.

First, you must take inventory of your current residence. Analyze your possessions using this grid of four questions:

1.  Will I miss it in a week?
2.  Will I miss it in month?
3.  Will I miss it in a year?
4.  Will I miss it in ten years?

Next, label four separate pieces of paper with the following titles - Non-negotiables (i.e. grandmother's antique head board), Give to Family, Sell, and Charity. Physically go to each room in your home and make your lists. Then take one page at a time and begin the process of getting rid of the stuff you will not need in your new home.

Last, I have two very important pieces of advice. To the empty nesters: the kids may no longer reside in your home but quite possibly their "treasures" do. Give them a call. Tell them you have gathered all their things together, and give them two weeks to come and get it before you donate it to charity. To the pack rats: downsizing does not give you permission to rent a storage unit for all those things you "might need one day." Resist the temptation. If you find yourself needing an objective viewpoint, a professional organizer can take away much of the emotional hassle.

While downsizing is never easy, remember the words of Christ. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
